Moon Far Away is one of the most outstanding neofolk bands in the world, whereas Vishudha Kali is a well-established ambient/post-industrial project with a "Ride the Tiger" sort of <a href="http://uzm.spb.ru/andyaum/vishudha_kali.htm">attitude to art and life</a> that Julius Evola would be proud of. The combination of the two projects here is explosive in a very good way. Будем Жить (Бонус) (5:02)<br /><br />The much-anticipated new album from Russia's Moon Far Away, one of the top neofolk projects in the world, <em>Minnesang</em> deals with "the deep-rooted feminine archetypes in contemporary art," a theme which is "embodied in the title, which identifies a genre of medieval knight lyrics" (Tesco.com). Musically, the album is significantly more electronic and even, at times, "poppy" compared to its predecessors, and it will certainly prove to be a new experience for fans accustomed to the band's more purely contemplative, "heavenly voices" sound. Part III (5:28)<br /><br /><div>Finland's October Falls crafts with equal skill both folk and metal albums, employing alternate versions of their logo (square and circular, respectively) to differentiate the nature of their releases. <em>A Collapse of Faith</em>, the project's newest release, is their third metal album, following the EP <em>The Streams of the End</em> (2007) and 2008's full-length <em>The Womb of Primordial Nature. </em>Like its predecessors, <em>A Collapse of Faith</em> is a simplistic yet powerful composition, with moments of Ulver-like acoustic ambience interspersed among the pounding metal sections. After recruiting an entirely new lineup, Negru released <em>Vîrstele Pămîntului </em>at the end of March. The Norwegian black metal musician was released from jail on parole about a year ago, and, immediately upon his release, set about crafting a new album, his first in eleven years and his first <em>metal</em> release (having released two dark ambient records while in prison) since 1996's <em>Filosofem</em>.<br /><br />I would like to firstly state that I don't particularly care for Vikernes as a person, and that, although I have read many versions of what happened the night of Euronymous' murder (including Varg's own claim of self-defense), murder is murder and, besides this, Vikernes has often struck me as rather arrogant in some of his statements (humility is a pagan virtue as well). But, regardless, I am not here to judge the man himself, but rather his music.<br /><br />And, as a musician, Vikernes is unquestionably brilliant. One would think that, being not only well past the prime of his youth (by which time the creative "fire" is supposed to have long cooled to faint embers), but having spent two decades in the creatively stifling environment of prison, it would have been difficult for this man to craft anything of remotely equivalent quality to the records of his youth. And, yet, <em>Belus</em> is an incredibly powerful and transcendent album, easily one of the best metal releases in recent years.<br /><br />Musically, <em>Belus</em> is a blend of the sheer intensity of <em>Hvis lyset tar oss </em>(1992) with the hypnotic and circular riffing of <em>Filosofem</em> (1996), although containing some novel moments of clean, chanting-like vocals which work incredibly well here. Woven among the hissing walls of feedback are the intricate (and underappreciated) lyrics of the album, which tell the story of the common European deity known as the "White God", referred to in the various European traditions as Apollo, Baldur, Byelobog/Jarilo, Belenus, etc. The album is, thus, not only musically superb, but offers those of us interested in the ancient European heritage a mature work of art through which to immerse ourselves in a world lighter and purer than our present reality. For all of these reasons, <em>Belus</em> may, in fact, be Burzum's most powerful release to date.<br /><br />As for the man himself, whatever happened in Varg Vikernes' past is over. He has certainly been made to suffer for either real or perceived guilt. But, the fact that he has been able to record an album of such high quality so shortly after his release seems to point to a fruitful and creative life ahead of him. Let the World with the Sun go down (6:04)<br /><br /><em>Germanium </em>Metallicum, the latest release from industrial masters Von Thronstahl, sees the band abandoning the more melodic neofolk of 2008's highly-acclaimed <em>Sacrificare</em> (2008), and returning to the bombastic martial landscapes of earlier releases. Containing an impressive 19 sample-laden tracks, the album features a host of international guest artists, including English writer/musician Troy Southgate and Rose Rovine E Amanti's Damiano Mercuri.<br /><br /><em>Germanium Metallicum</em> is certainly an ambitious release, although it may be a bit overwhelming for one sitting due to its length, not to mention that some of the tracks are unmemorable and even downright unimpressive. Sur L'Océan Couleur De Fer (8:18)<br /><br />Although firmly rooted in the black metal community, with their early releases (the 2001 demo <em>Tristesse Hivernale</em> and the incredible EP <em>Le Secret </em>(2005)) rather definitive of the genre, French project Alcest have, with the release of their 2007 full-length <em>Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde</em>, morphed into a shoegaze/post-rock band with only subtle metal influences. This, of course, puts them in a rather difficult position, because, on the one hand, most 666kult666 metal dudes consider this "sissy" music, whereas indie/shoegazer kids will ignore this because it is not quite hipster enough (what with the screaming and the artwork and everything...).<br /><br />It is precisely for these reasons, however, that I absolutely love this band. I adore good, heavy metal (black/doom/folk metal, that is), but am often put off by the infantile intellectual stances of some of its artists, whereas, although I find much shoegazer and indie music very well composed, it almost always suffers from a bitter blandness that is the natural result of a scene which has nothing more to say (the contemporary, primarily Anglo-American, hipster scene being but one of the social manifestations of the dead-end of post-modernism - a topic on which I hope to write a full-fleged essay sometime in the future).<br /><br />Alcest, however, is a band that manages to combine the best from both sides of the musical spectrum to forge something quite astounding, which, while retaining the passion and intensity of metal, does not succumb to ridiculous Satan praisin', and, although employing the aesthetics of shoegazer music, is not merely the latest fashion statement of a clueless hipster, but conveys a certain eternal, Platonic beauty and a true metaphysical depth.<br /><br />Alcest's second full-length, <em>Écailles de Lune</em>, is slated to be released on March 29 via legendary German label Prophecy Productions, with whom the band have a five-record contract. This album is, in my opinion, as brilliant, if not more so, than the band's debut. Evoking atmospheres similar to those composed by fellow dark ambient acts Brighter Death Now or Profane Grace, this band takes their music one step further, however, from mere ambiental soundscapes towards something far more profound. Featuring moments of both melancholic solitude akin to the post-industrial reflections of Arbeit ("The Sick Muse"), as well as soaring, operatic climaxes which bear a striking resemblance to French neoclassical masters Elend ("For Francessca"), the music here will appear as both refreshingly new and incredibly familiar at the same time. It is the feeling of a recurring nightmare, when one knows what dark shape is looming behind the corner but screams silently nevertheless. Through its excellent juxtaposition of samples and neoclassical compositions, the album very effectively conveys the horror of an event which is in many ways a testament to and monument of the dark modern age. The addition of more pounding, rhythmical industrial moments as well as occasional vocals provides for greater variety and gives this release a more dynamic quality.<br /><br />In summary, <em>Nuclear Sun</em> is one more in a long series of albums which have contributed to the establishment of Spain as a powerhouse of neoclassical music, but it also proves that Spanish music of this type is not limited to fairies and Tolkien (not that there's anything wrong with fairies and Tolkien), but can explore a wide gamut of themes. While I generally find this band's industrial and ambiental soundscapes much more appealing than their attempts at more conventional songwriting (I consider <em>Ashigaru Revealed</em> their greatest work), <em>1666</em> is, nevertheless, a far more memorable record than <em>Leonidas</em>, effectively combining catchy neofolk songs with more ambiental moments. Despite the length of time elapsed between the two releases, <em>Throne of the Depths</em> doesn't veer too far from its predecessor, featuring a similar keyboard-laden, "Emperoresque" wall-of-sound assault with occassional breaks of acoustic ambience. And, yet, surprisingly for such a large quantity of work, the overall quality of it has remained consistently high, with many of the recordings being some of the best recent releases in industrial music. </div><br /><div></div><div><em>Leonidas</em>, the band's 2009 LP offering, however, is not among those releases. In fact, the record honestly strikes me as one of the worst A Challenge of Honour albums I've ever heard. While frequently compared to 2005's <em>Seven Samurai</em>, and, although stylistically similar, this is a much more uninspired and passionless effort. However, the focus with these artists is certainly much more on quality as opposed to quantity, with <em>Karataia Asterope</em> being the group's first full-length featuring entirely new material since 2002.<br /><br /></div><div></div><div>The wait has been absolutely worth it, nevertheless, as this record has proven to be yet another excellent collection of compositions inspired by the culture of ancient Hellas. The aesthetics evoked by this release, however, and by the band in general, are not of the transcendent, Apollonian variety as portrayed by other neoclassical projects like Triarii, but rather of a more sensuous and Dionysian nature, driven by ritualistic percussion and choral female vocals. One may often feel when listening to this album as if one had strayed upon a flock of nymphs frolicking with Pan in some forgotten wooded grove. And, while <em>Aava Tuulen Maa</em> is as impressive and well-composed a record as the previous one, neither of the two "folk" albums have been able to match the power of the debut.<br /><br />Thus, Belov can, by all means, continue making this kind of music and that would be perfectly fine, because he seems to be proficient at whatever he does, but I believe he should make at least one more forray into metal to see whether he is capable of producing another masterpiece on par with his debut (which I believe he is). Although Drudkh distinguishes itself in the black metal subgenre by featuring short lead guitar passages on many of its recordings, these kinds of moments punctuate this release with greater frequency than on any other Drudkh record before or since. Like these albums, <em>Of Ruine</em> takes inspiration from English painter Louis Wain, to whom the record is dedicated to in the liner notes, along with Royalist composer William Lawes, writer H.R. Wakefield and painter Charles Sims.<br /><br />Yet, despite the thematic similarities to the abovementioned albums, <em>Of Ruine</em> is of a much darker breed, at points so dismal it is almost unbearable (e.g. <em>"I have seen this world as a great howl of pain...as the great disappointment...in which all our hopes flicker out..."</em>). The four metal tracks are sandwiched between a short acoustic, naturalistic intro evoking summer's end, and a closing 9-minute ambiental track "The First Snow", which uses essentially the same guitar progression as the intro but to quite a different effect. Although the base (of plodding guitar and percussion) is solidly doom metal, the sound strays far from any kind of doom orthodoxy by the ever present clean keyboards and occassional clean electric guitar parts, which at times sound strangely, but in a good way, like the background music one might hear on an elevator (crashing to its <em>doom</em>, of course - mwhahaha!). The well produced and gracefully executed combination of acoustic guitar, violin, synthesized instrumentation, and occasional light percussion provides a stunning canvas on which vocalist Ash's distinctly deep and somber voice can come to its full expression. The lyrics are more maturely and skillfully crafted here than on any of the band's previous releases and the melodies have a certain circular simplicity and warm familiarity which makes them infectious.<br /><br /></div><div>While I generally prefer neofolk music to be performed in the native language of the artist, as I believe "identity" (specifically European identity in the post-modern world) is one of the key themes of the genre, Neutral's English lyrics here accord naturally and flawlessly with the music. While side A consists of melodic, accordion laced (courtesy of Andreas Ritter of Forseti) acoustic ballads, the flipside provides an experimental reinterpretation of much of the material found on side A.<br /><br />Although <em>All Pigs Must Die</em> is often decried as both musically and lyrically unsophisticated and immature, I consider it a very intriguing album. The ambiguity of the lyrics (if one uses ones imagination a bit) is striking, such as that found, for example, on the opening, title-track "All Pigs Must Die". Is this a vegetarian (Douglas P. is one) anthem against slaughter houses, a critique of society's convenient and typical "historical pigs", or an attack on dishonest businessmen? He has also composed scores for a number of films, most significantly those of Yugoslavian director Emir Kusturica.<br /><br />Bregovic's work for Patrice Chéreau's 1994 historical epic <em>Queen Margot </em>sees the artist both reworking many of his former compositions and rearranging traditional songs. One example of Bregovic's genius at the art of reinterpretation is the track which appears on this album as "Elo Hi". It was originally a traditional gypsy song, reworked by Bregovic into Bijelo Dugme's 1986 rock hit "Kada Odem Kad Me Nebude", and then rearranged for this album with lyrics in Hebrew and masterfully performed by Israeli singer Ofra Haza.<br /><br />The other tracks on this album were generally created through a similar process of readapting existing melodies of mostly Balkan origin into music for a film about sixteenth century France. While this may seem like a strange idea, it works surprisingly well, thanks to Bregovic's skill, as well as the talent of the artists with whom he collaborated. The music here, however, is not indicative of the nature of the majority of Bregovic's discography, which is far more strongly Balkan-influenced. One thing that makes this album particularly powerful, even among the rest of <strong>Current 93</strong>'s extensive discography, is the absolutely seamless manner in which it partners traditional folk music with <strong>David Tibet</strong>'s idiosyncratically delivered lyrics. As for the lyrics, they are a masterpiece in their own right, a testament to Tibet's spiritual visions and agonies. Although there are tracks on this album which will certainly appeal upon first listen, the album itself requires that it be experienced repeatedly before the beauty of it can properly sink in. Accordingly, the music of <em>Rituale Romanum (2006)</em>, the band's first official full-length LP, is grandiose and stern, and, although always acoustically-based, abounds with martial percussion and electrical flourishes.<br /><br />Standout tracks include "Aachen (Holy Roman Imperium)" and "Soldato Cristiano (let us pray in silence)" featuring Josef K. of Von Thronstahl, while the cover of Von Thronstahl's "Adoration to Europa" (aptly retitled "Adorazione de'll Europa") is more powerful than the original.
